Community members and leaders rallied Tuesday outside SUNY Downstate Hospital, calling on state officials to preserve in-patient services and secure the future of the hospital.
The group, Brooklyn for Downstate, also released a new report highlighting the hospital’s vital role in the East Flatbush community.
Advocates say the hospital is essential for addressing health disparities in the area, particularly for conditions like diabetes and maternal care.
“This is the only hospital that has a kidney transplant program,” said Bishop Orlando Findlayter. “Closing it would be devastating for our community.”
The report recommends cutting roughly 100 beds, renovating the Emergency Department, and upgrading the maternity ward to make the hospital financially viable.
In April, state capital funding extended the hospital’s operations until 2025, but advocates are pushing for long-term solutions.
Gov. Kathy Hochul recently announced eight appointees to an advisory board tasked with developing a plan for the hospital’s future.
