Days before the start of the new school year, the city confirmed its first monkeypox case in a child.

Doctors say the child likely came into contact with the disease at home.

Experts say parents should be cautious, but not overly concerned about their children contracting the illness.

As of Friday, a total of 2,888 cases have been reported in New York. The Bronx has reported 493 cases, and Brooklyn has reported 661 cases to date.

A little over 70,000 vaccines have been administered throughout the state, with Brooklyn being the borough with the highest doses administered.

The city says it is only providing the initial doses for those who are most at risk.

"There is a juvenile case of monkeypox in New York City – while we understand the concerns of families, we also know that the overall risk of exposure for children in the city remains very low,” said Dr. Ashwin Vasan, the city’s health commissioner in public statement.
