New York City is ramping up efforts to stop the increase of COVID-19 cases as the omicron variant spreads throughout the five boroughs.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a six-point action plan to stop the spread of COVID-19 amid spiking infection rates. These six points of action include a new health advisory, increasing testing capacity, distributing free KN95 masks and rapid at-home tests.

De Blasio is also doubling down on city inspections to ensure mandates are being upheld, and the city started a media campaign to encourage New Yorkers to get their booster shot if they are eligible.

Health officials say all boroughs are seeing high transmission rates, and they expect the numbers to continue their rise as people gather for the holidays.

The city's plan to tackle the increase in virus cases comes as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended Thursday that people should opt to take the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines over the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

This new recommendation is coming off data that shows the Johnson & Johnson vaccine can cause blood clotting at a four-per-one-million rate, citing 54 separate cases of thrombosis since Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine started being distributed. Nine of those 54 have died.

City officials are insisting that any COVID-19 vaccine is better than none.
