New York City is expanding its speed camera initiative, installing additional devices in more school zones throughout the city.
As hundreds of thousands of city students head back to school this week, officials say the expansion of the safety initiative couldn't be coming at a better time to help keep students safe.
Over the next two years 140 speed cameras will be installed at school zones throughout the city.
Currently, there are 20 cameras in operation near schools as part of the city's Vision Zero program. The initiative is aimed at eliminating pedestrian fatalities in the city.
Drivers caught speeding in a school zone face a $50 fine. The city says that since January, 183,000 violations have been issued to people caught speeding in school zones.
Officials say that as enhanced lighting and more traffic signals will also be installed at busy intersections near school zones.
