A first-of-its-kind clubhouse was unveiled today in New York City Monday – designed to provide yellow cab drivers a space of their own while they're on the job.
The location - 161st West 22nd Street in Manhattan - will have amenities such as bathrooms, a gaming room, a meeting area, a gym and a space for daily prayers. Advocates for yellow cab drivers say the space, built by private investment firm Marblegate, was overdue.
“To see a space that's so dignifying, that takes care of drivers, allows them to rest and relax and reenergize – this is a beautiful thing,” said Bhairavi Desa, the executive director of New York Taxi Workers Alliance.
The clubhouse is the latest in a series of efforts to help support the city's yellow cab industry.
Marblegate also provided debt relief for close to 2,000 yellow cab drivers.
The taxi clubhouse is open to all yellow taxi drivers, as well as Uber and Lyft drivers.
