New Yorkers gathered in Times Square Wednesday to say farewell to their unwanted memories from 2022.
Good Riddance Day was inspired by an old Latin-American tradition to stuff dolls with objects that represent bad memories.
Those in Times Square celebrated a little differently, writing memories down on paper before tearing them to shreds. Some even took out their grief on a punching bag.
"I'm going to wrap it up, and throw it in a bin, and then start from then on, to enjoy the show of life again,” said Joseph, a New Yorker who took part in today’s event.
Some took the opportunity to run a victory lap for their good memories this year, including New Yorker Mike Betzler.
“January of this year I got diagnosed with cancer and this was my radiation mask that I had to wear 35 times,” said Betzler, who is celebrating that he is now in remission. “I’m lucky to be here for Good Riddance Day.”
