An Orange County catering hall is the latest Hudson Valley venue agreeing to pay back thousands of dollars in deposits for canceled events due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Attorney General's Office says Falkirk Estate and Country Club in Central Valley admitted the money was used to pay for the venue's bills and not the couple's weddings.
Four Hudson Valley couples are now being awarded more than $40,000 collectively in lost deposits in an agreement between the attorney general and catering hall.
“Although the pandemic forced many couples to cancel their
weddings, they shouldn’t have been left waiting at the altar for their
refunds,” James said in
prepared remarks. “This is a big day for couples who
were not able to celebrate at Falkirk, and I encourage anyone who paid a
deposit but was denied a refund for their cancelled event to contact my
office.”
Sen. James Skoufis says at least one of the couples contacted his office and that he helped them file their complaint.
"As they reschedule their nuptials, those special days should be filled with optimism, not worries about lost funds," he said.
News 12 reached out to Falkirk by phone and in person Monday but have not heard back.
Falkirk has also agreed to refund other customers who lost deposits due to COVID-19 closures as part of their agreement with the state.
The settlement follows two other agreements with venues in the Hudson Valley, including the Westchester Broadway Theatre and Greentree Country Club, which were ordered to refund hundreds of thousands of dollars due to canceled events.
