New York City officials are closing all city beaches to swimmers as Hurricane Erin approaches.

The closure officially takes effect at 6 a.m. Wednesday and will last through Thursday.

The category 2 storm isn't expected to make landfall but as it moves up the East Coast officials said its going to whip up the ocean.

As of right now, the storm has sustained winds of more than 100 miles per hour according to the National Hurricane Center.

City officials expect waves will be breaking between 9 and 13 feet which can life threatening.

There will be no lifeguards on duty, and beach goers will see red flags indicating beaches are closed.

However, lifeguards and parks enforcement patrol will be on hand to enforce the beach closure.

Despite the closure, the sandy area of beaches and boardwalks will remain open, but officials are urging New Yorkers to not enter the water -- as they said, even the strongest swimmer can be swept out to sea in these conditions.
