New York City is taking steps to protect reproductive rights amid efforts to strip abortion rights in states across the nation.
In a historic announcement, Mayor Eric Adams announced New York City Health and Hospitals will now offer abortion care access through ExpressCare Telehealth Services.
Appointments are available seven days a week from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. Patients who are considering abortions can be connected with a provider who will go over educational information, their options and how they can get access.
If eligible, a patient can be prescribed and receive a medical abortion pill in the mill within days. Patients must have an address in New York City, be in the city at the time of their appointment and when they take the medication.
"Other ways like that where we can make equitable access to care, that's a continuous improvement process for all of us providing access to health care,” said Wendy Stark, president of Planned Parenthood of Greater New York said.
Dr. Marisa Nadas, who is an OBGYN for New York City Health and Hospitals, says since the ExpressCare Telehealth service launched on Monday, they’ve seen an influx in people requesting appointments.
"Any restrictions and bans on abortion are not to promote safety and to protect the people who are seeking abortion, they are with the end goal of banning all abortion, so the fight continues in so many ways,” said Dr. Nadas.
