A plan to speed up one of Brooklyn's busiest corridors is finally moving forward. The Department of Transportation intends to install bus-only lanes in the center of Flatbush Avenue from Livingston Street to Grand Army Plaza. The goal is to make commutes faster and more reliable for passengers.
"Along this stretch of Flatbush Avenue, the bus goes on average 4 mph," said Betsy Plum, executive director for the advocacy group Riders Alliance. "That is half the citywide average of 8 mph which gives us the slowest buses in America."
It's something advocates have been pushing for years.
"Over 130,000 bus riders are relying on Flatbush Avenue every single day. These we know are majority Black women and low-income bus riders," said Plum. "It is finally time that we get these individuals, these important riders to our city, priority on Flatbush."
Not all riders think the plan will make a difference.
"The bus is still late sometimes," said one commuter. "And then there’s cars that use the bus lane only and then don’t really care about the bus. And they’re always beeping at them."
The plan also includes placing concrete islands, where passengers can wait to safely board. But some residents worry that’s going to cause more chaos.
"That’s going to cause more traffic... especially when the Barclay Center has events and stuff like that," said one neighbor.
Still, Plum said the plan is a win-win for everyone.
"I think if we recognize how much more congestion there would be of 130,000 people didn’t have a bus or were instead in a car, that would cost way more congestion," said Plum.
The DOT is encouraging community members to share feedback on the plan. Advocates are hopeful the new bus lanes will be implemented by this summer.
