According to AAA, the average price for regular gas in New York is now $2.99, that's three cents less than a week ago and down $0.14 cents from this time last year.
At one BP station in Canarsie, regular gas costs $2.79 for both cash and credit transactions.
And with the cost of everyday necessities like food and rent being so high, drivers said being able to save a little bit at the pump goes a long way.
"I definitely will travel more because the prices have gone down," said Juan Barraza, who first noticed prices dropping over the summer and has seen the difference. "I can't say by how much, but at the end of the month it ends up being a couple hundred dollars."
AAA also recommends drivers avoid higher speeds and plan more efficient routes as additional ways to save on gas.
