New York City lawmakers highlighted more than 20 proposals aimed at improving e-bike safety during a major oversight hearing this week.
Officials are calling it the largest assortment of safety bills ever considered at one time. It comes after over a dozen people were killed in crashes involving e-vehicles this year.
Lawmakers are considering everything from mandatory liability insurance for delivery services to GPS-driven sidewalk detection systems that would slow down bikes outside traffic lanes.
"No New Yorker should have to wonder if their next commute will be their last, no New Yorker should have to worry about their loved ones coming home at days end," council speaker Julie Menin said during the hearing.
The committee has not yet voted on the measures. Another hearing is scheduled for Oct. 27.
