? Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R-NYC) is urging state lawmakers to require all convicted felons to provide DNA.
Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly say taking DNA from people convicted for misdemeanors will help solve cold cases and exonerate the innocent. Officials say since 2002, DNA has helped lock up 210 sexual offenders. Governor George Pataki (R-NY) is also in favor of the legislation, which is pending in the state Assembly.
The city is spending $250 million to build a new state-of-the-art crime lab. Construction is expected to be completed by November.
