New York City Parks officials said they were able to hire more lifeguards this summer compared to last summer.
The department told News 12 there were 930 lifeguards staffed at city beaches and pools this season, up from last year's high of 850 lifeguards but still short of being fully staffed at 1,000 lifeguards.
According to city data, this summer has been the deadliest in five years with six drownings at city beaches, including two at Coney Island Beach.
