New York City Schools Chancellor Meisha Ross Porter took the stage at New Pathways Academy to share some words of wisdom at the eighth grade stepping up ceremony in Melrose.
She reminded the students of all they've been through this past year.
"Through a pandemic, through racial uprising in our city, you still made it to this point today and you should give yourselves a round of applause for that," Porter said.
Students recalled the life lessons they will bring with them to high school.
"We were here for a reason and we should not let anyone affect that but above that, we need to remember to love and respect ourselves," said valedictorian Brianna Gaynor.
