The New York City Education Department announced on Friday that high school student athletes must be fully vaccinated in public schools in order to compete in high-risk sports.
Those sports include football, volleyball, basketball and wrestling.
Student athletes and coaches in PSAL will have to show proof of having at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine before the start of the season.
The DOE says they are following guidance by the New York State and CDC. The guidance states that high-risk high school sports should be competed virtually or not at all in areas of high community transmission.
With the sports season a couple of weeks away, basketball coach Rob Phelps at Bedford Academy in Brooklyn tells News 12 he has been hearing from concerned parents. They say it forces them to tell their kids to get vaccinated or don’t play. Many of them already missed all of last year.
The start of competition for some of these sports begins Sept. 3.
