NYPD: Mother killed, 3-year-old and 5-year-old children in grave condition after assault in Sunset Park

The 43-year-old mother has died, and her 3-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son are currently in critical condition.

A married mother of two children was beaten to death with a hammer and her two children are fighting for their lives after a violent assault in Sunset Park on Wednesday afternoon, according to the NYPD. 

The incident took place just before 3 p.m. at 531 52nd St. in a second-floor apartment, according to law enforcement officials. Officers say that the suspect, who is 47 years old, was trying to walk out of the building and was placed under arrest.

All three victims suffered injuries due to attacks from a hammer and were removed to a nearby hospital. The 43-year-old mother has died, and her 3-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son are currently in critical condition.

The apartment where the incident took place was a three-bedroom apartment, with each room occupied by a separate family. The person arrested was living in a room with his 9-year-old son. The mother who died and her two kids were in another one of those rooms, which was where the assault occurred, according to police. 

The suspect was found with blood on his body when he was arrested, according to law enforcement. 

No charges have been made at this time.
