NYPD: 1 dead, 1 officer injured after two shootouts in Brooklyn

Authorities say one person was killed and a police officer was shot multiple times after two shootouts broke out in Bedford-Stuyvesant Wednesday night.
Authorities say 28-year-old Officer Brian McGurren, of Long Island, was released from the hospital Thursday after he was shot three times.
Police say McGurren and two other officers were on patrol in an unmarked car near Saratoga Park when they received a call about a shooting a few blocks away around 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Just a few minutes after that call, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea says the officers saw a man walking quickly near Howard Avenue and Macon Street.
When they approached him, police say he opened fire on the officers, hitting McGurren three times. One bullet went into his vest, which police say saved his life.
Shea says the officers fired back and hit the suspect once in the leg.
Police say the suspect is also a person of interest in a shooting just four blocks away and moments prior on Madison Street and Broadway.
Shea says the suspect was seen on video shooting at a car with three people inside. Authorities say a 28-year-old man was killed and another man was hurt.
Mayor de Blasio and police say the shooting and several other recent shootings in the area appear to be gang-related. The mayor says the officers were assigned to patrol the area for that reason.
"They were positioned near that park in Brooklyn because there had been some previous violence," he says. "This is what precision policing is all about."
Sources say 26-year-old Boyce Hayward is accused of opening fire at the officers. They say he is also believed to be a person of interest in the prior shooting that left one person dead.
News 12 was told charges are pending against the suspect.
