Police now have a 12-year-old boy in custody in a shooting that killed a 14-year-old boy in Brownsville on Sunday morning.
The victim has been identified as Jasai Guy, 14. He was found shot and killed in his own housing development. Police say the 12-year-old currently in custody is his cousin.
That 12-year-old is being held on charges of manslaughter and recklessly caused death, criminal negligence with homicide, and criminal possession of a weapon.
The incident took place around 10:30 a.m. Sunday inside of the Howard Houses, according to the NYPD. Officers found Guy lifeless with a gunshot wound to the chest.
A vigil has since formed outside of Guy’s home - lined with granola bars, cookies and chips – as an ode to the innocence of a young teenager who fell victim to gun violence.
Jasai Guy now joins 12 other people who have been slain in the last year in this precinct, according to city data.
“Unfortunately, this is a dilemma that we're dealing with and that facing and we have to somehow figure it out,” said Pastor James Nicholson, of Brownsville. “As a pastor and a community leader, we really have to focus on, I think, it starts with the family dynamic and we have to get these families strong."
Police are still investigating how this shooting took place. Neighbors tell News 12 they believe the two children had been playing with guns.
