At least one person was injured in a police-involved shooting in Flatlands, according to the NYPD. The shooting took place just before 2 p.m. at the intersection of Avenue K and Utica Avenue.
Police say there was a dispute between men people before the shooting. The officers — working in civilian clothing — tried to separate the men, when one of them took out a boxcutter. They say the suspect didn't drop the weapon, despite the officers' request and tried to re-engage with the other man. Officers got in the middle of the two men and shot the suspect in the torso after he came within three to four feet of them. The FDNY says two members of service were transported to Kings County Hospital. A 33-year-old man was also taken to the hospital in critical condition, sources say.
"This is disappointing because we're supposed to be safe," one person told News 12. "This is a center for surgery. We have specialists, we have medical offices. We have elderly people walking around, and then stuff like this happens. I really felt they could have de-escalated the situation without using gunfire."
Police said the suspect has three incidents regarding mental illness dating back to 2017. A police vehicle was also involved in an accident near the scene.
