Police say if you're filing by mail, drop mail containing checks inside the post office to ensure it is not stolen from the mailbox. When writing checks, use permanent ink that can not be erased and check your account balance to ensure the right amount is being deposited.
If you see someone tampering with the mailbox or mail-fishing, report it to police.
Lastly, the IRS will never call and ask for a gift card payment, crypto-currency or wire transfer.
