Police maintained a presence in the area one day after a 17-year-old was shot near a school campus in Brownsville.

The shooting happened around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday on Thomas S. Boyland Street. Police say the teen was shot in the ankle before running about 500 feet to the school on Bergen Street. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.

Authorities believe the shooting was an isolated incident. No arrests have been made, and the shooter remains at large.

Parents dropping off their children Wednesday morning expressed mixed emotions about safety in the area.

“I feel safe. Not the best thing, but it does happen all the time,” said Gary Pinnock.

“I feel a little scared, but it can happen anywhere. As long as the police are here... you don’t feel comfortable anywhere right now,” said Melissa Santander.

The New Achievement First Brownsville Elementary School, one of the schools housed within the campus, acknowledged the incident and emphasized its commitment to safety.

“Following our emergency response procedures, we promptly initiated our safety protocols and notified families about the situation,” said Jacqui Alessi, a representative for the school. “In response to the incident, we have increased security presence at the building today. We are committed to working with the NYC Department of Education and NYPD to ensure the safety of our students and staff.”

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Meanwhile, students arriving at the school Wednesday morning were being redirected to different entrances—potentially part of new safety measures in response to the incident.
