NYPD and FDNY officials say a cyclist was making their way down 21st Avenue in Brooklyn when they were hit by a car door, and then run over by a school bus.
The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m.
Police say the school bus driver remained at the scene. The 69-year-old man was taken to NYU Langone Hospital and is in critical condition.
Bensonhurst residents told News 12 that cyclists aren't the issue, but how they conduct themselves on the road.
“You have to watch these car doors, because the drivers of the cars, they don’t even look, they just open the car door and come right out and that’s it, [cyclists] want to go speeding and what not naturally they’re going to get hit," said John, a 38-year Bensonhurst resident.
According to city data, this has been the deadliest first quarter in terms of traffic violence. Brooklyn has experienced its deadliest first three months in the past decade. There have been 21 reported injuries and 4,044 deaths since March.
