The new pilot program to strap police officers with body cameras is being launched a month ahead of schedule, the NYPD announced. 

Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton were at the new police academy in Queens Wednesday to demonstrate how the cameras will work during a routine stop. 

The simulation showed that officers simply slide down a mechanism to expose the camera lens and start recording. They then slide the lens cover back up when they want to stop the record. 

City leaders emphasized how important the program is in restoring public trust, and respecting and protecting civilians. 

The pilot will be in six precincts citywide, beginning with three of them this Friday. They include the 40th Precinct in the South Bronx, Police Service Area #2 in Brooklyn and the 120th Precinct in Staten Island. 

The three other precincts will use a different camera for this pilot program. That launch is expected to happen sometime next week.

The pilot program is expected to last three months.
