The borough is in mourning today after a 22-year veteran of the NYPD and father was shot and killed while on duty.
According to authorities, 47-year-old Peter Figoski, of West Babylon, was responding to an apartment break-in at 25 Pine St. in Cypress Hill at around 2 a.m. They say 27-year-old Lamont Pride was hiding inside the home and shot Figoski in the face.
Figoski was rushed to Jamaica Hospital in Queens where officials say he was in critical condition and later died from extensive injuries.
At a news conference, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said that Figoski's partner, Glenn Estrada, chased after Pride and placed him under arrest, but that a second suspect was able to get away. Estrada was also treated for a shoulder injury.
Police say they recovered a pistol near where Pride was arrested. One round had been discharged and the shell casing had jammed inside the gun. Kelly said there were 10 other live rounds and that the gunfire could have been worse.
Figoski had more than 200 arrests in his career and had 12 medals awarded, including eight for exceptional police duty. He leaves behind four daughters, a wife and his own parents.
