An NYPD officer was slashed in the hand in Coney Island Thursday afternoon.
Police say the suspect in connection to the slashing was shot in the leg and shoulder. Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said that an officer was approached by a man wielding two knives. Sewell says other officers nearby responded to the scene, where the suspect was told numerous times to drop the weapon.
"These officers rushed to help their fellow officer," says Sewell. "As they did, the armed perpetrator began to advance on these officers."
Sewell says when the 57-year-old suspect from Brooklyn tried to approach the officers, one of them fired four shots, hitting the suspect. She says while the suspect was on the ground, he continued wielding the knives and sliced an officer on the hand.
Police Benevolent Association President Pat Lynch says this is what NYPD officers do on a regular basis.
The officer was released from Coney Island Hospital in good spirits and greeted by his fellow officers. Police say the suspect is also expected to be OK.
"While we don't know the motive behind this attack, we certainly know the actions of these officers exemplifies what it means to be New York's Finest," says Sewell.
