The NYPD on Wednesday released breaking new crime stats as violence continues to plague the streets of New York City.
Police revealed shootings have gone up 16% compared to this same period last year. They also say overall crime is up more than 36%.
NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell says officers and detectives are fully engaged in stopping crime on the streets. Sewell acknowledged there have been a total of 4,000 felony arrests so far this year, an all-time high in the last 21 years. Officials say 335 of those arrests are linked to murders and shootings, which is way up from last year.
Kenneth Corey, NYPD Chief of Department, tells News 12 this latest rash of violence is a cycle that police are all too familiar with.
"I've been a cop for a long time, I've seen this story many times, and I know the ending to it,” said Corey.
“The ending has to change. The ending that I've seen far too often is that one of these individuals are laying dead in the street and the other one is being sought for his murder."
