Pharmacies across New York, including in Brooklyn, will soon accept prescriptions in one way: electronically.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently announced that all prescriptions written in the state must be transmitted electronically starting March 27. Pharmacies will no longer be allowed to accept phone calls, faxes or paper prescriptions.

The requirement is part of the state's so-called I-STOP initiative, which aims to end prescription-drug abuse. Doctors will have to refer to a registry of patients' prescriptions before submitting a prescription.

Cuomo signed the electronic-prescription legislation in 2015, but prescribers were given additional time to comply.

More than 60,000 prescribers currently use the electronic system.

"Addiction can affect anyone from any walk of life, and this administration will continue to use every tool it can to combat this epidemic," said Cuomo.
