New York State has launched a new website to help students and parents discover what restrictions their school district has on cellphones for the upcoming school year.

Earlier this year, state lawmakers approved the implementation of a bell-to-bell ban on cellphones during the school day as part of this year's state budget.

The new law prohibits unsanctioned use of smartphones and other internet-enabled personal devices on school grounds in K-12 schools throughout the school day and permits schools to develop their own plans for the storing of such devices. The schools are also required to give parents a way to contact their children during the school day when necessary.

The website enables New Yorkers to search by district or school name among the more than 1,050 public school districts, charter schools and BOCES facilities that have published their policy.

New Yorkers can visit ny.gov/phonefree to look up their school district's policy.
