New York State has made some of the biggest gains in the nation for graduating high school students, according to a new report.
A study from John Hopkins University found that nearly 75 percent of students got their GED in 2009, a 13-percent increase from 2002 when state graduation rates were at around 60 percent.
In New York City, the on-time graduation rate rose to 61 percent in 2010, which is up from 59 percent the year before.
Educators credit a focus on high-needs districts for the improvement, but say increased rates don't necessarily lead to achievement beyond graduation.
