Hundreds of incoming New York University freshmen are lending a hand to the Parks Department in East New York.

 

About 1,400 students were part of a follow-up to the One Million Trees NYC program Tuesday. It is the fourth time the area was focused on since it became a Trees for Public Health Zone in 2007.

 

The students, led by Director of Street Tree Planting Navet Strauss, pulled weeds and cleaned up tree beds. Strauss says the area requires attention because of its low canopy cover and high population density.

 

Since the designation, the program has planted 6,000 trees in East New York.

 

The program continues on Wednesday with another group of NYU freshmen.
