The second NYPD officer involved in a weekend shootout was released from Kings County Hospital Tuesday afternoon.

Officer William Reddin was shot in his right hip.

A group of fellow officers applauded Reddin as he left the hospital in a wheelchair.

Police say Reddin and his partner, Officer Andrew Yurkiw, were responding to reports of gunshots fired in Bedford-Stuyvesant around 3:30 a.m. Saturday when they encountered a fleeing suspect.

Authorities say Jamal Funes, 34, first fled in a vehicle, and the officers gave chase. The pursuit ended in a shootout.

Reddin and Yurkiw shot Funes multiple times, and he remains hospitalized in critical condition. Funes also allegedly shot Yurkiw, but the bullet struck his vest.

Investigators say they have not yet determined that the bullet that hit Reddin was fired from Funes' gun, but prosecutors charged him Tuesday with attempted murder. Police say Funes is from New Jersey and has an extensive criminal background.

Reddin, a nine-year veteran of the force, will return home to Long Island to continue his recovery. 

Reddin's superior officers hold him in high regard, according to his sergeant.

"He's personally responsible for the removal of more than 200 guns from Bedford-Stuyvesant," says NYPD Sgt. Mike Miller. "I'm glad to have him. The community is glad to have him. And we want him out there working again. He will be back very soon."
