A fire early Monday morning at a Flatbush apartment building killed one person and injured five others.
The incident took place on Nostrand Avenue.
Two people were forced to jump from third-story windows to escape the flames. One of the people who jumped died from their injuries. He was identified by City Councilman Jumaane Williams as Tony Celestin, an active member of the community and a father of three.
Officials say Celestin landed on a mattress. The other man who jumped, Jene Berto Maurice, landed on an awning and survived.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
