News 12 New Jersey has learned that eight firefighters were injured battling a Thanksgiving night fire at a West New York apartment building. Two of those firefighters suffered serious injuries, officials say, with one remaining in the hospital.
The fire
began around 5 p.m. Thursday on Bergenline Avenue and 53rd Street. News 12 was told that the firefighters were hospitalized for broken bones and smoke inhalation when a portion of the building collapsed following an explosion. Four other people also suffered minor injuries.
The Hudson County Arson Task Force confirms that the fire was put under control just before 8:30 p.m. The preliminary investigation states the fire began in a bedroom. A cause was not yet known.
The American Red Cross says the organization has provided food and clothing to 19 people who were displaced. The city is helping them find temporary lodging.
