Officials with the Federal Bureau of Prisons say an inmate has died while in the Metropolitan Detention Center.
Officials say the inmate was also a former DEA investigator, identified as Frederick Scheinin. They say he arrived at the detention center on Tuesday.
There is no word on the cause of the inmate’s death at this time, according to officials.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons tells News 12 that the inmate, who was previously with the Federal Agency Drug Enforcement Administration, was found unresponsive just before 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
Responding staff members immediately started life-saving measures as they called for EMS services, according to officials.
The inmate was pronounced dead by EMS personnel, according to officials.
The 34-year-old’s death is on the heels of his arrival to the jail facility Tuesday under pre-trial status pending his sentencing for the attempted production of child pornography, along with attempted receipt of child pornography.
According to the United States Attorney Office Southern District of New York, those charges dated back to offenses from October of 2019 to January of 2020.
