Residents of Greenpoint put some government experts in the hot seat during a two-day meeting on health and environmental concerns that stem from a 1978 oil spill. Environmental, health and legal experts conducted one-on-one sessions with residents to explain what they knew about the spill and the status of the cleanup effort. Although officials from the Department of Environmental Conservation estimate it will take another 20 years to completely clean up the spill, health officials say the the oil is not affecting residents? health. Residents, however, disagree and say they have problems with toxic chemicals coming from sewers and believe it is associated to the spill. Another community meeting will be scheduled for the fall to update residents on any additional progress.
