Politicians gathered Sunday to take a stance against maternal mortality, especially among Black women.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand was joined by Mayor Eric Adams, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and other politicians outside NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County to call for more funding for two new maternal health care programs for the 2022 fiscal year.
Gillibrand's request from the House and Senate Appropriations Committee leaders includes $7 million to fund programs that refuse implicit bias in maternal health, and another $25 million to create a program of health care services that can reduce the rate of maternal deaths among Black women.
According to the American Medical Association, Black women are 3 to 4 times more likely to die in childbirth than white women.
These elected officials say the problem is especially evident here in New York.
