Two bodies were found in the rubble of Monday's fire and building collapse in Bed-Stuy, according to the FDNY.
While the building was classified as abandoned, several homeless people lived there anyway, neighbors of the building told News 12.
The fire chief said on Monday they would continue to search through the debris.
"I'm so sad to hear of the news that someone did perish, so just lifting up prayers for the community, for the families," said one resident.
Officials are still searching through the rubble for any others who could be trapped.
The FDNY spent hours battling heavy flames and smoke early Monday morning. The Department of Buildings says this was a construction site that had been issued at least three stop work orders. The chief says the entire building collapsed just moments after they arrived.
The Department of Buildings says five of the neighboring buildings are now under a full vacate order. Several of them were damaged by the flames. The building where the fire started is being demolished.
"Super sad and super avoidable," said Asad Ali of Bed-Stuy. This building has been like this for like ten years and there's been so many complaints and violations and so many people affected and lives and businesses. There will be so many problems with the city going forward if they don't take action on things like this."
One firefighter sustained minor injuries.
