On-and-off downpours plagued Brooklyn commuters during the Monday evening rush home.
Though windy, the day remained sunny and humid through the late afternoon, when dark storm clouds began rolling through the borough.
By Monday evening in Gowanus, thunder-tinged rain began coming down hard, catching many residents walking about off guard.
Pockets of heavy rain led to major flash floods, causing at least three cars to get stuck in close to a foot of rain on Ninth Street. Police had to shut down part of the street for an hour to prevent drivers from attempting to make it across.
The city warned residents that excessive runoff could cause the flooding of urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses, drainage areas and other low-lying spots.
