A building at 326 Rockaway Ave. is now open in Brownsville, featuring 216 units that are 100% affordable and 130 units designated as permanently supportive housing for young adults and teens aging out of the foster system and facing homelessness.
Rents for those units will be maintained at only a few hundred dollars a month, with the other units listed between $1,095 and $2,301. Wraparound services, such as GED training, tutoring and even group activities like choir will be offered on site.
The project comes as a joint effort between Slate Property Group and the Riseboro Community Partnership.
People will be able to recognize the building, as it has the largest mural in Brooklyn at over 150 feet, known as "King of Love," on the side of the property.
Developers tell News 12 the mural is a sign that this is a unit that serves the community and reflects it, rather than simply being located within.
"This creates a loving environment that helps people who've been aging out of foster care, people who've been faced with housing instability to kind of get their financial footing, to get the job services and trainings they need so that they can lead productive lives and happy lives," said Riseboro Ceo Kieran Harrington.
With a focus on young families, the building features two separate outdoor areas, with a playground in the center meant to give parents a break and kids a chance to make lifelong memories in a space that's safe.
"I hated when I grew up that kids would know if they were Section 80 or NYCHA because of how their apartments looked. No kid should know how much their parents make, and so we wanted to have a space where people feel really proud of who they are, where they are," said developer David Schwartz.
The unit is also all electric, with solar panels helping to offset some of the demands of the building's units for the environment.
