4h agoFriday marked a monumental day for P.S. 396K in Brownsville, as the school held a renaming ceremony to pay tribute its founding principal.
The school was renamed to Sid Miller Academy. It's a tribute to the educator who passed away in 2015 and was the founding principal of the school. Staff say he's most remembered for his dedication to students with disabilities.
Students and staff celebrated Friday morning by going around the gym to play at learning centers and doing activities inspired by Miller's teaching.
The school then held a renaming ceremony, sharing words about Miller and celebrating his legacy. Staff say the school was the first New York City school exclusively for children with severe and multiple disabilities and it wouldn't be where it is today without Miller.
As for what's next, school Principal Dr. Keisha McCoy Dailey says they plan to hang a plaque in front of the school to make the renaming official.
