Padel Haus opened its doors on Kent Street in Williamsburg on July 10, making Brooklyn home to New York’s very first padel club.

Padel is a tennis-like sport invented in Mexico during the 1960s. It was popularized in Argentina and Spain, and gradually made its way across Europe.

Santiago Gomez, founder of the Padel Haus, has played the game for over 20 years in his home country of Mexico. When he moved to the city 12 years ago, he was surprised to find there were no padel clubs here.

"During the pandemic I went to Mexico where I have a court at home, and I was playing every day, and then I figured why not bring it to New York?" he said.

Since its opening, many new and old players have come to play padel.

"Padel, I think, is easier to pick up and an easier learning curve, more social,” described former tennis player and padel enthusiast Daniel Weiss Fisch.

Newcomers Kasey Oldford and Josh Rosenberg enjoyed their experience at Padel Haus.

"It was hard at first but then it gets easier,” said Oldford.

Rosenberg, who played tennis in college, finds padel easier in comparison.

“It makes you feel like you can hit the ball a lot better. It's really fun,” he said.

Padel Haus is currently offering monthly memberships and day passes.
