Palestinian supporters say a Jewish leader was lying about a hate crime that took place outside the Barclays Center.
Police say the incident started at an exhibition game between the Brooklyn Nets and an Israeli team earlier this month.
A YouTube video was sent to News 12 by Leonard Petlakh, a local Jewish leader who says he was assaulted for being Jewish. The video shows Muslim woman Nerdeen Kismani holding a Palestinian flag at the game, when a man attending the game with Petlakh snatched the flag from her.
Police say this sparked an argument that ended outside with Petlakh allegedly getting punched by Shawn Schraeder, who was arrested and is facing assault charges.
Kismani says that when she went to the police for help, they completely disregarded her.
Police did initially investigate the assault on Petlakh as a possible hate crime, but ended up charging the suspect with assault and harassment.
News 12 asked officials about the assault on Kismani and were told they had no record of her complaint.
