Parents in Borough Park say they were blindsided after discovering that at least 40 registered sex offenders live in their neighborhoods between two different zip codes, despite receiving no prior notification from the school or NYPD.

A letter sent to parents on March 11 informed parents about a registered sex offender moving into a nearby area.

However, after checking the state’s sex offender registry, parents found out that 18 offenders reside in ZIP code 11219 and 25 in 11220.

Under a 2008 chancellor’s regulation, the NYPD has a policy in place for notifying parents when a sex offender moves into a neighborhood.

News 12’s review of the policy found that while the NYPD is authorized to share this information, it is not required to do so.

Parents at P.S. 164 expressed concern, noting that many children walk or take the bus home.

News 12 reached out to the NYPD for further clarification on its notification process.

Council member Susan Zhuang is hosting an educational workshop on Tuesday night to help parents understand how to protect their children when a registered sex offender moves into their community.
