As a way to bring business to mom-and-pop stores in Park Slope, a group of entrepreneurs is launching a campaign called ?Buy in Brooklyn.?
As part of the campaign, local businesses will have giveaways and gimmicks to drum up sales. During the month of November, shoppers can borrow yellow umbrellas from local shops. Business owners do ask that shoppers return the umbrellas to participating merchants when they are done with them.
Next month, businesses will have a late-night holiday shopping extravaganza.
Entrepreneurs say they started the campaign to keep money and character in their community. They say many local businesses are struggling due to skyrocketing rents and chain stores. However, they say statistics show a dollar spent locally goes three times the distance.
