Dozens of Coney Island residents are upset after they were told they have to shell out money for parking tickets that they say they never should have gotten in the first place.
Longtime New York City Housing Authority residents say they have been parking vertically in front of their building on West 29th Street for as long as they can remember. When they got home Monday, however, they counted about 40 cars with tickets on them.
One disabled resident who has a handicap sign on his car says getting a ticket was an unnecessary burden for him.
The tickets say "no angle park - head or back in - sign posted." Neighbors want to know why they are just getting tickets now when there aren't, and have never been, signs saying they couldn't park this way.
A police source tells News 12 that drivers should park parallel to the curb unless there is a sign saying otherwise, but they haven't said why this wasn't enforced sooner. Drivers have reached out to local traffic cops and are going to a community board meeting this week to try and work out the issue.
News 12 is waiting to hear back from the Department of Transportation on how drivers are supposed to know how to park.
