The safety of children crossing the street in Sunset Park was the focus of a community forum.
Parents say two children were recently struck by vehicles crossing the street. Local organizations, parents and police gathered to find solutions for keeping kids safe. There are many schools located near Third and Fourth avenues, and parents feel children are constantly at risk crossing busy streets.
Police say crossing guards are assigned to several locations to help kids navigate the streets. However, parents say that isn?t enough, saying many kids stay after school and come home later when guards have left.
Police officers from the 78th Precinct say at least two crossing guards are assigned to each school. Officers say they may hire more for the 2008 school year.
