Bay Ridge residents are finally seeing changes to a street they say has long been dangerous for pedestrians.
New crosswalks, speed bumps and traffic signs have been added along six intersections on Marine Avenue following the 2023 death of a 72-year-old woman who was struck by a car.
“This is a very notorious street for speeding,” said mom Amy Morgenstern, who lives nearby. “I was in my living room with the windows closed, and I could hear it. I have two young kids who cross the street, and we’re always scared to cross in front of our own building.”
She says it felt safer walking with her family on Thursday, thanks to the improvements.
“It feels good that something changed, got accomplished, and that we were heard," she says.
Community leaders say the upgrades were necessary.
“The high-visibility crosswalks make drivers more aware that pedestrians are crossing here, where before there were no marked crosswalks,” said Josephine Beckmann, district manager for Community Board 10.
More changes are on the way. Soon, more daylighted corners will remove current parking spaces to improve visibility between drivers and pedestrians.
Beckmann tells News 12 the area's offset streets and multi-way intersections mean more measures and more attention are needed to prevent further accidents and fatalities.
“We need to pay attention here,” Beckmann said. “We need to watch pedestrians, and we need to slow it down.”
