A new effort was introduced at Tribeca Pediatrics in East New York on Saturday with a focus on connecting pregnant mothers with services and resources to make the experience of child birth and pregnancy smoother.
Tribeca Pediatrics, along with other partnering organizations, hosted the first resource and community baby shower. It consisted of giveaways for the expecting mothers that included clothes and diapers. They also held yoga and breathing exercises to provide for an easier pregnancy.
"In this part of Brooklyn, there haven't really been great resources for moms who are pregnant to help them have a safe pregnancy, a safe delivery," said Dr. Wendy Johnson, a pediatrician at the Tribeca Pediatrics. "And to feel comfortable and confident once they have their baby."
About 60 mothers signed up for the session. Ashanti Walker, one of the mothers there, said she wished and event like this was around when she had her first child.
"I did not have a doula, I didn't have as much information as I have now, and it was a hospital birth for my first child," Walker said. "This child will be birthed at home."
A representative with Tribeca Pediatrics said the organization is planning to hold more of these sessions. It also plans to expand the community baby showers to its other locations across the tri-state area.
