The Prince Joshua Avitto Community Center, named after the 6-year-old boy who was fatally stabbed in an elevator in 2014, has opened in East New York.
Avitto's friend Mikayla Capers was seriously injured in that stabbing, which happened across the street from the new center. The killer, Daniel St. Hubert, was found guilty of murder at trial last month.
The push for a community center in the area was first initiated by former City Councilman Charles Barron. After Avitto's death, Council member Inez Barron and Mayor Bill de Blasio committed to making the facility a reality.
The center will be operated through a partnership between Man Up and Good Shepherd Services, offering numerous services that include job training and development, recreation, social services and more.
Avitto's mother told News 12 that she knows the boy is looking down on the center, happy and proud.
